Magnetohydrodynamic turbulence: Observation and experiment

چکیده
We provide a tutorial on the paradigms and tools of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence. The principal paradigm is that of a turbulent cascade from large scales to small, resulting in power law behavior for the frequency power spectrum for magnetic fluctuations EBðf Þ. We will describe five useful statistical tools for MHD turbulence in the time domain: the temporal autocorrelation function, the frequency power spectrum, the probability distribution function of temporal increments, the temporal structure function, and the permutation entropy. Each of these tools will be illustrated with an example taken from MHD fluctuations in the solar wind. A single dataset from the Wind satellite will be used to illustrate all five temporal statistical tools. VC 2015 AIP Publishing LLC. [http://dx.doi.org/10.1063/1.4919391]

Temporal And Spatial Turbulent Spectra Of MHD Plasma And An Observation Of Variance Anisotropy
The nature of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence is analyzed through both temporal and spatial magnetic fluctuation spectra. A magnetically turbulent plasma is produced in the MHD wind tunnel configuration of the Swarthmore Spheromak Experiment. The power of magnetic fluctuations is projected into directions perpendicular and parallel to a local mean field; the ratio of these quantities shows...
متن کاملPolarization Alignment in Driven Magnetohydrodynamic Turbulence
Motivated by the analytical predictions of [12, 13], we report numerical evidence showing that in driven incompressible magnetohydrodynamic turbulence, magneticand velocity-field fluctuations locally tend to align their polarization vectors. This dynamic alignment is stronger at smaller scales with the angular mismatch between the polarizations decreasing with the scale, λ, approximately as θλ ...

متن کاملDensity Fluctuation Spectra in Magnetohydrodynamic Turbulence
It is shown that within the framework of nearly incompressible magnetohydrodynamics, but not within that of neutral-fluid hydrodynamics, a k -5/3 inertial-range wave number density fluctuation spectrum is to be expected at the same times that k -5/3 kinetic energy and magnetic energy cascade spectra are present. A previous discrepancy between theory and observation in the local interstellar med...
متن کاملImpact of Hall effect on energy decay in magnetohydrodynamic turbulence
[1] We examine numerically the influence of Hall effect corrections to Ohm’s law upon the decay of homogeneous compressible magnetohydrodynamic turbulence and conclude that there are no significant differences in global decay rate associated with the Hall effect. This affirms expectations that energy decay is controlled by the large-scale eddies.
